Gideon Mensah has emphasised the importance of discipline, gradual progress, and realistic ambition as Ghana national football team prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
The Black Stars, who will participate in their fifth appearance at football’s biggest international competition, are determined to produce a stronger performance after disappointing group stage eliminations during the 2014 and 2022 editions of the tournament. The upcoming global championship will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Mensah, who currently features for AJ Auxerre in France, explained that Ghana’s immediate priority should centre on successfully advancing beyond the group phase before discussions about a deeper tournament journey begin. According to the defender, meaningful progress at the World Cup must be achieved through careful preparation and consistent improvement rather than unrealistic expectations.
Speaking to the Ghana Football Association, the left back stated that the squad remains determined to surpass their previous World Cup outing, where Ghana exited the competition during the opening stage. He stressed that although every nation dreams of reaching the final and lifting the trophy, such ambitions can only become attainable when teams focus first on overcoming immediate challenges.
Mensah explained that qualification from the group stage must remain the team’s principal objective before attention shifts toward possible knockout stage opportunities. He added that progressing beyond the opening round would provide the confidence and momentum required for Ghana to compete more strongly against elite international opposition.
Ghana have been placed in Group L alongside Panama national football team, England national football team, and Croatia national football team in what analysts expect to become one of the tournament’s highly competitive groups.
Meanwhile, the Black Stars have already commenced preparations in Cardiff ahead of an international friendly encounter against Wales national football team scheduled for June 2. The fixture is expected to provide valuable tactical assessment opportunities before the start of the World Cup.
Head coach Carlos Queiroz is also anticipated to confirm his final twenty six man squad in the coming days as Ghana intensify preparations for the competition.
The Black Stars will open their World Cup campaign against Panama at BMO Field on June 17 before facing England at Gillette Stadium on June 23. Ghana’s final group fixture will then take place against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field on June 27.
