The Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced the introduction of a mental health hotline under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), aimed at delivering professional support and e-counseling services across all districts in Ghana. This initiative is part of a broader effort to provide timely mental health interventions and ensure equitable access to care.
Speaking at the official launch of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Month, themed “Mental Well-being, My Voice Matters,” the Minister emphasised that mental health services will be fully integrated into the Free Primary Health Care policy framework. “No Ghanaian should be left behind when it comes to mental wellness,” he stated.
The launch event, held in Accra, signaled the start of the annual Mental Health Awareness Month, popularly known as Purple Month, celebrated throughout May. This year’s theme highlights advocacy and inclusion, encouraging individuals to speak up about their mental health experiences and rights.
Representing the Vice President, Her Excellency Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Hon. Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo reinforced the message of compassion and inclusion. “Mental illness does not discriminate. It can affect anyone, anywhere, at any time,” he said. “We must all work to create a society where mental health is no longer hidden behind closed doors.”
Delivering remarks on behalf of NHIA Chief Executive, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, Mr. Oswald Essuah-Mensah, Acting Director of the Corporate Affairs Directorate, affirmed NHIA’s commitment to strengthening mental health care access through insurance coverage. “Mental health is a vital part of our well-being,” he said. “The NHIS is moving to cover conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and schizophrenia.”
Mr. Essuah-Mensah revealed that NHIA is in the final stages of developing tariff structures to operationalize mental health services under the NHIS benefits package. “No one should be denied care due to financial barriers,” he emphasized.
Professor Pinaman Appau, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Authority, delivered a passionate call to action. “Each of our voices holds the potential to inspire change,” she said. “Let us raise awareness and demand better mental health services for ourselves and our communities.”
As part of its commitment to accessibility, the NHIA set up a special registration and membership renewal desk at the event, enabling participants to enroll or update their NHIS status on-site.
The launch sets the stage for a month-long series of activities across the country focused on mental health education, advocacy, and expanding access to services, further advancing Ghana’s public health agenda.
